　　先通讀，后細讀

　　閱讀一篇文章，最好采用先通讀、再細讀的策略。首先要快速瀏覽全文，這一點非常重要。因為一篇文章是一個整體，是圍繞一個中心思想組織的。如果我們了解了文章大體講的是什么，有了整個篇章的結構模式，就有利于我們理順句子或段落間的關系，準確地把握文章的主旨，同時也有利于我們在解題過程中有重點地細讀部分內容。

　　一篇文章無論長短，要做到一口氣讀下來。對于生詞，只要不妨礙我們理解主要內容，可暫時放下不管。如果我們讀讀停停，左顧右盼，往往會把文章完整的體系讀破了，有礙于對文章整體的理解。在掌握了文章的大體內容后，我們再根據需要解答的問題逐句細讀，認真分析詞義及句子結構，從而更準確地把握文章的具體內容。

　　An old friend from California called from the airport to tell me that he had arrived. I was not able to leave the office, but I had made plans for his arrival. After explaining (解釋) where my new house was, I told him that I had left the key under the doormat (門墊). Since I knew it would be pretty late before I could get home, I suggested that he make himself at home and help himself to anything that was in the refrigerator(電冰箱).①

　　Two hours later my friend phoned me from the house. At the moment, he said, he was listening to some of my records after having had a delicious meal. Now, he said, he was drinking a glass of orange juice. When I asked him if he had had any difficulty finding the house, he answered that the only problem was that he had not been able to find the key under the doormat, but luckily, the living room window by the apple tree had been left open and he had climbed in through the window. I listened to all this in great surprise.② There is no apple tree outside my window, but there is one by the living room window of my next?door neighbor's house!
